RE: Great Guitarists
OK, not really ranking them, here are some of my favorites. (I posted some of these in another thread, but here goes (and sans Don):
Starting five: Hughie Thomasson: absolutely brilliant combo fingerpicking with driving rhythm playing, wish he were still with us, Earl Klugh: I admire his devotion to acoustic instrument, brilliant composer, Dickey Betts: doesn't get the adulation of Duane but solid still the same and besides, he wrote the most IMO memorable ABB songs, Brian May: he's my favorite "screamer" tone without the ear damage, Larry Carlton: can play all genres not just jazz-fusion, the human guitar jukebox who smiles while playing, Al Perkins: my man of steel, Stephen Stills: rocks an acoustic til his hands bleed, electrically on par with any of the "big names" Second string: Joe Walsh (borderline...if it were the 70's he'd still be in my starting lineup), Terry Kath, Lowell George, Toy Caldwell (all RIP) Cut from my team: Carlos Santana (his style grates on my nerves...) Obviously I've just given away my age by posting this.... ![]() oh, and pinch hitting: Clarence White. |

RE: Your most underrated guitarist
Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek from America. Their music is mellow so no one thinks about how well they play. But they're awesome. Dan left the band in the 70s to play Christian music, at which he was very successful! Gerry and Dewey Bunnell are still on tour! You MUST go see them. Check out their schedule at venturahighway.com. They are FANTASTIC live! Better than the Eagles any day! Why? Because with America you see thim in theaters with 2-3 thousand people. After the show they often sit down at a table. Fans line up and get autographs and take photos with them. And they're marvelous to meet. Youthful, healthy, cheerful, funny, and EXTREMELY intelligent.

Al, while moderating the forums today we kicked out the spam thread about favorite songs. Feel free to re-post your thoughts about America's "Horse With No Name." (Great song by the way!) |

RE: Merged Thread/Great Guitarists-Underrated Guitarists
I'm not crazy about the chickin-pickin-lightenin-bolt finger-tappers who seem interested in how many notes they can cram into a nanosecond. I like to listen to someone who can take a note or a phrase and squeeze it until it bleeds.
I'll think of others that belong here I'm sure, but to head the list in no particular order Joe Walsh (loyal to this guy to the death....just eat his style up! Great slide work) Phil Keggey (Considered by many in the 60's and 70's to be the best. Played with Glass Harp before turning to Christian music. Stevie Ray Vaughan (okay, so he played fast. He's my exception) Eric Clapton (Lifetime study of the Blues and pentatonic scales!) Hendrix (Hard to tell where his guitar ended and he began.) |
