Hello all, with some encouragement from webmistress Mary I'm posting a link to a recent cover I recorded for "All of You"
http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8229240 A little background info, well I've been in love with this song ever since watching "Heavy Metal" back in 1990 on good old Cinemax and then recorded it on VHS (hmm somehow I miss those days) and got the soundtrack immedietly. So at this point in my life I was just starting to learn guitar and said to myself "you know I would like to play All of You someday", that day came about 2 weeks ago. For the past 2 years I've been going to school for Recording Engineering so to speak and so I'm kind of putting together this Resume of songs and coversongs to show where my skills are at and over the years my music skills have gotten eh somewhat better. Since there is no sheetmusic, tabs, and even a MIDI file for the song, I just sat down and figured out everything from scratch, and still I couldn't get everything just right, especially with the bass and the solo. So first came the drums, basically wrote a midi file of everything I could hear and also tried to get the dynamics of the player down, then I used a Plug in called Superior Drummer 2.0 for the actual drums sound and with some minor tweaking completed the drumkit to be mixed in. Bass is done with a MiM Fender Jazz bass thru a REDDI Direct Inject, to a Neve clone mic Pre then to my pc/audio interface, boom instant sound and tone, only added a Compressor plugin to even out my playing and make just about every note the same volume. Guitars, used a Edwards LP clone for the distorted tones, a Carvin strat for the clean guitar sound, Amp used is a Hughes & Kettner Triamp mkII (A Marshall type on steroids) SM57 mic and a API512 clone mic pre. All effects used are in the software, I pretty much record my guitars dry. Phew, any other questions just ask! |

Rockmanxpr: That is a mean-sounding mix, man! Thick as heck yet perfectly clear. And that's some mean guitar playing and drum programming! GREAT job!

Thanks for the compliment! I hope I don't get into any copyright troubles... and the recording itself is still a work in progress, I definetly don't have Don's fingers and my bending is slacking! |

RE: First post! Did a cover of "All of You"
I've posted a bunch of covers on youtube and there are millions of covers on youtube. I heard someone had his video removed by youtube, but I think the original artist requested that this particular cover be removed. Anyway, as long as you're not selling covers or using them to promote selling your own originals, I hope the artists see covers as a promotion of their music, not a violation. After all, imitation the highest form of flattery.

Awesome job! And it's just a "work in progress?" Wow!
I agree with Al as far as covers on YouTube. Policing YouTube 24/7 is a waste of time. Let the artists earn the big bucks with Guitar Hero and Rock Band and passive Play Station addicts. The guys/girls next door struggling with real instruments and doing the mixing and production by hand shouldn't be discouraged. I doubt Don would have any issues with it. Fans would still pay to see him play it live. (And once your fans hear it on the net and want to pay to see you play it live, then Don "wins" too! )

Yeah, still needs some work but nothing too drastic, only thing I would re record is the guitar solo, all the other instruments are done just need to mix them a bit better, Sonic Glue so to speak... Man I wish Don would do this song live! |

Update:
Well found a better place to store my MP3 at a much better bitrate, and a remix of the song as well https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4040966/Brian%2...122609.mp3 |
